Hikari Arts History
Written By Our Owner Nina
I founded Hikari Arts 12 years ago in 2011, fresh off the block having just graduated with a Masters from Exeter University. When I returned to my home town of Swindon, I started teaching piano and keyboard for a local music school in Old Town. Then when that music school school closed down, I had these students, but no venue! At the time I was working part time for Swindon Dance, and they offered to rent one room to me on the top floor, and continue teaching. Well.. that one room has turned into three teaching rooms, an office and a waiting area!
Hikari Arts started with just 10 students, 1 teacher (me!), £500 pounds and a pipe dream. Since then, more than 450 students have walked through our doors!
I first took music lessons when I was 10 years old. It was in the bedroom of a local piano teacher’s house. When I came to create Hikari Arts, I wanted to a school that felt different. Basing the school in a professional venue, allowed me to move away from the days of lessons in someone’s bedroom, or cluttered living room.
I am so proud of what Hikari Arts has achieved, with the help of my incredible team that we call the ‘Hikari Arts family’. I look forward to more adventures to come!
Our Name 'Hikari Arts'
Name Meaning
Hikari (光) is the Japanese word for 'light' or 'shine'. This reflects our belief that people shine when they are given a platform to be themselves, and express their creativity in a healthy way. We have seen even the shyest of students grow, gain confidence and shine through our lessons.
Culture Of Japan
A Japanese name name was chosen for the school, as a reflection of Nina's Japanese roots and her passion for the culture and people of Japan. Our school aims to reflect the strong work ethic, attention to detail, and incredible customer service that Japan is known for.
Christian Values
Our name meaning 'light' is a reflection of the Christian values of the school. The word is found in many verses in the bible, such as this one:
“I am the Light of the world. He that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8: 12)
Location
Our school is based in the beautiful grade II listed Town Hall, in Swindon town centre. We share the building with Swindon Dance, an inspirational not-for-profit dance organisation. Thanks to our unique connection with Swindon Dance, music, drama and dance are all in one building. We also make use of the great facilities that the building has to offer, such as the 92 seat theatre and various studio spaces.
